Routers at Risk: FBI Cites New Chinese Cyber Threat

FBI: New Cyberthreat from China Targets Home Internet Routers

The FBI has issued an alert regarding internet routers being compromised by Chinese hackers, a situation detailed in a report by Scripps News. The agency highlights a concerning trend where Chinese cybercriminals infiltrate routers within the U.S., repurposing them as instruments to potentially undermine American interests and critical infrastructure. This cybersecurity menace is not only a threat to major corporations and government entities but impacts ordinary citizens and small businesses as well.

Specifically, the FBI’s investigation reveals that older router models, particularly those manufactured by Cisco and NetGear, are at heightened risk due to their outdated security features. These vulnerable routers become conduits for orchestrated attacks against vital U.S. infrastructure, including water treatment plants, the electrical grid, and transportation systems, thereby presenting a significant threat to national security and public safety.

To protect yourself, the experts recommend keeping your router’s software up to date, disabling remote access features, and considering the purchase of a new router if yours is more than a decade old. This is important because a hacked router can lead to serious problems like data theft, ransomware attacks, and extensive downtime for businesses.

Additionally, there’s been another cybersecurity issue involving Chinese hackers exploiting remote login technology by Ivanti, which could lead to stolen documents and sensitive information. Agencies using Ivanti, including the Department of Homeland Security, had to quickly disconnect and update their systems to prevent breaches.

If you think your router has been compromised, there’s a way to report it to the FBI through their website at www.ic3.gov.
